Mobile molecular testing could help fight HIV in Kenya through early infant diagnosis

Africa still has the highest prevalence of HIV globally with many people who are HIV positive going on to contract AIDS. A lack of awareness and poor access to testing and treatment are major contributors to the high numbers of those affected. Kenya Medical Research Institute Research Officer Joseph Mwangi, is attempting to change this through taking viral load testing and early infant diagnosis in the countryside.

Freedom For You Grants Program Finalist Profile: Dr Joseph Mwangi

In January 2015, Ubiquitome announced the finalists of the Freedom For You grants program. The program was designed to provide support for remote qPCR projects, with each winner receiving a Freedom4 device. The ten selected finalists are receiving support from Ubiquitome in the form of Freedom4 qPCR reagents and consumables, project design consultation, and technical support, including wet lab processing. Three grant winners will receive a Freedom4 gold standard qPCR mobile device worth USD$25,000.  

One of the selected finalists is Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) research officer Joseph Mwangi for his research on HIV and AIDS in Kenya.

Treating and educating nomadic Ethiopian communities around HPV

Rural Ethiopia is home to large populations of nomadic farming communities who travel the countryside herding livestock. These communities give little consideration to preventitive or safety measures against sexually transmitted infections which has lead to significant health issues. This is not an issue of irresponsibility, it is simply a lack of education and understanding.
