Protecting Adelie penguins in the Ross Sea through mobile molecular testing

The Adelie penguin exists only in Antarctica with the bulk of the population believed to live in the Ross Sea. Tests have shown there are two separate genetic variants or clades that make up the Adelie penguin population. Cawthron Institute senior scientist Jonathan Banks has been studying mating behaviours in these penguin populations and he is also trying to determine if one of the clades lives exclusively in the Ross Sea. If this was the case the Ross Sea clade of the Adelie penguin would be monitored and protected by the New Zealand government, affording it greater conservation protection.

Freedom For You Grants Program Finalist Profiles: Jonathan Banks

In January 2015, Ubiquitome announced the finalists of the Freedom For You grants program. The program was designed to provide support for remote qPCR projects, with each winner receiving a Freedom4 device. The ten selected finalists are receiving support from Ubiquitome in the form of Freedom4 qPCR reagents and consumables, project design consultation, and technical support, including wet lab processing. Three grant winners will receive a Freedom4 gold standard qPCR mobile device worth USD$25,000.

Cawthron Institute senior scientist Jonathan Banks is one of the selected finalists for his research on the Adélie penguin in Antarctica.

Studying amphibian decline due to chytrid in the Costa Rican forests

The forests of Costa Rica offer ideal living conditions for many different species of amphibians. Climatic zones range from wetland jungles to dry, high altitude forests. This variable climate supports a variety of species adapted to different conditions making Costa Rica a rich environment to study amphibians. But Costa Rican frogs are under attack from disease that has caused some species to become extinct in the past few decades.

Protecting the endangered snow leopard through mobile molecular testing

Snow leopards (Panthera uncia) are a highly elusive and endangered species of leopard that lives in the mountainous areas of Central Asia. They are a relatively understudied, yet globally widely known, species. In 2013, representatives from each of the countries with snow leopard populations met to discuss the conservation efforts required to further protect the species. It was decided that by 2020, 20 landscape-level populations would be secured, each with 100 breeding leopards. This initative has been backed internationally and helps underpin studies working towards this goal.
