About the Freedom4 - FAQs
Can you really hold it in the palm of your hand?
Yep. It weighs about 5lbs including the battery pack and fits quite nicely into the palm of your hand.
How did you manage to get the device so small and still get gold standard performance?
The Freedom4 was designed as a result of 10 years of intense development work by experts in hardware, software and molecular biology. The goal was to change the paradigm of real time PCR from the current shared instrument approach to one where the user is freed from the bench to perform their studies on their timeline and wherever they need to do it.
Does it come with a consumable?
Yes – we supply consumable plasticware for the Freedom4 which is specially designed for optimal thermal performance.
What sample volume can it use?
Why did you use laser based optics?
When high accuracy and precision are required, users trust lasers to deliver them. Although this can be expensive, the costs are usually justified because the result matter. The Freedom4’s laser based optics are a big part of the reason we’re able to show such great performance against established market leaders in conventional large footprint real time PCR instruments (see the comparison graph below).
How long can I expect the device to run on a single charge?
Much like talk time on a cellphone, this will vary depending on your use but you should typically expect 5-6 hours of run time on the Freedom4 between charges.
How about recharging?
Typically this is about 2-3 hours.
What does a typical run time look like?
Again this depends on your protocol, but in our experience most user’s 40 cycle protocols are completed in less than an hour. Many users have been pleasantly surprised by the speed of thermocycling on the Freedom4.
How do you control the Freedom4?
The Freedom4 can either be controlled via USB to a laptop computer with the Freedom4 application software or via Bluetooth using an iPhone app.
Is the Freedom4 an open platform?
Yes – we know that the last thing you need it to have to ‘change horses’ and revalidate a different assay chemistry just to use a new machine! The Freedom4 is designed to detect either the SYBR or FAM dyes most commonly used in real time PCR i.e. the assay you already have.
What kind of warranty comes with the Freedom4?
We’ll sort out any problems that are down to the device in the first year. If you want more than that, just let us know.
Specifications and performance
The Freedom 4 has been designed to meet or exceed the performance of laboratory based real time PCR platforms.
“All established assays were shown to be transferable and gave comprehensible results .”
